What Dairy Cow Rubber Flooring Handles Heavy Traffic and Impact Best?
7:03

Some parts of a dairy farm take far more punishment than others. Entry and exit points, collecting yards, rotary platforms and underpasses see the whole herd twice a day, usually in wet conditions, along with scrapers, backing gates and the odd tractor. Flooring in these areas has to absorb thousands of hoof strikes without cracking, lifting or losing its grip.

The dairy cow rubber flooring that handles heavy traffic and impact best is a dense, high-tensile rubber that either interlocks tightly as tiles or comes reinforced in long rolls, with a high-grip top surface and a studded underside for cushioning and drainage. Which format suits depends on the area, how many cows move through it and whether machinery shares the space.

Why high-traffic areas wear out flooring

Concrete is hard and abrasive, and the damage it does to hooves is most obvious where cows turn. Herringbone sheds ask cows to make 90-degree turns, and rotary platforms need a full 180. Every turn puts pressure on the claw, which is a major cause of white line lameness and digital dermatitis.

Rubber cushions that impact, but it has to cope with the same forces itself. Manure, constant moisture, scraping and cleaning chemicals all work against a mat, and a thin or low-grade product will start to crack, stretch or lift at the joins. Once that happens, the surface can turn slippery and the edges catch hooves and scraper blades.

Cows also move differently on a softer surface. Their average stride on concrete is about 600mm, compared with around 800mm on rubber or grass, so the right floor helps the herd flow through the shed faster. In a busy yard, flooring that holds up under that volume protects both animal health and milking times.

Interlocking mats for yards, bales and entries

For collecting yards, shed bales, entry and exit points, feed pads and rotary bridges, interlocking rubber tiles are usually the right choice. They can be fitted around the layout, fixed down securely and replaced individually if one section takes more wear than the rest.

Hex Floor Mats are built for heavy traffic. Each 1.8m x 1.2m mat is a natural rubber compound with high MPA and tensile strength, and the joins lock together tightly so effluent can't build up underneath. A hex pattern on top gives cows a confident footing, while the studded underside adds cushioning and drainage. They come with up to a 10-year warranty (conditions apply).

UltraGrip Mats are engineered for high-use areas and tough NZ conditions. These 1m x 1m mats have a round stud profile on both the top and bottom, giving extra grip and a softer feel underfoot in yards, standoff pads and drafting pens. They carry up to a 5-year warranty (conditions apply).

Both use countersunk screw holes, so fixings sit below the surface and hooves never come near hard objects. Both can also be scraped with a tractor scraper where there's no flood wash, and they work well with backing gates and dung busters.

Reinforced rubber rolls for machinery and long runs

Where vehicles share the space with cows, or the area is long and narrow, reinforced rubber rolls are often the stronger option. Fewer joins means fewer edges that can lift under a wheel or scraper blade.

ExtraGrip Roll is a heavy-duty, 20mm thick rubber with webbed mesh reinforcing for extra strength. Its high grip profile still works when muddy, it can be driven on, and it suits underpasses, slopes, races and cow lanes. It also helps stop mud and stones being carried from the race onto the yard. ExtraGrip Roll carries up to a 5-year warranty (conditions apply).

Rotary Platform Mats use the same 20mm reinforced construction for rotary dairies, where cows step on and off a moving platform at every milking. The high grip profile reduces the risk of cows slipping off the platform with up to a 10-year warranty (conditions apply).

For farm tracks and walkways, Track Mats use 100% recycled rubber with an integral steel cable system that stops the roll stretching or warping over time. They're cut to exact lengths, so there's far less lifting and damage than with interlocking mats over long distances, and they're backed by a 10-year warranty.

Matching the mat to the area

Each high-traffic zone puts a different kind of stress on the floor. As a general guide:

  • Collecting yards, entry and exit points: Hex Floor Mats or UltraGrip Mats
  • Milking shed bales and cups on/off areas: Hex Floor Mats or UltraGrip Mats
  • Rotary platforms: Rotary Platform Mats
  • Underpasses, slopes and races: ExtraGrip Roll
  • Farm tracks and laneways: Track Mats
  • Herd homes and slatted feed pads: Slat Mats for Herd Homes

Slat Mats for Herd Homes are designed specifically for high traffic. Made from a blend of virgin and recycled rubber with a high grip penny profile, they resist NZ UV so the edges don't peel up in the sun. Tabs on the underside drop into the slats for a secure fit, and they come with up to a 10-year warranty (conditions apply).

What makes rubber flooring last under heavy traffic

Tensile strength and compound quality matter as much as thickness. A dense, high-MPA rubber resists tearing at the joins and around fixings, while softer or lower-grade compounds tend to stretch and lift. Reinforcement (mesh in rolls, steel cable in track mats) does the same job over longer runs.

Secure fixing is just as important. Mats that move under load let manure and water get underneath, which speeds up wear and creates a trip hazard. Tight interlocking joins and countersunk fixings keep the surface flat and the edges protected.

The right mat also has to go in the right place. EasyMat products last five years or more on average, but lifespan depends on the application and the number of cows using the area. A mat designed for a walkway won't perform the same way on a rotary exit, so matching the product to the traffic is the best way to get value from your investment.

Getting the right floor for your herd

No single mat suits every high-traffic area on a dairy farm. Hex Floor Mats and UltraGrip Mats handle yards, bales and entries; ExtraGrip Roll and Rotary Platform Mats take on machinery, slopes and platforms; and Track Mats cover the long runs in between. Getting the combination right means fewer lame cows, better cow flow and flooring that holds up season after season.
